Being pregnant, especially when the pregnancy is unplanned, is stressful. Add in an unsupportive partner, and it becomes even more difficult. It’s hard to change someone’s mind in this situation, but there are some things you can do. Here are a few suggestions as you move forward in your pregnancy.
Have You Considered Couples Counseling?
Talking with a counselor often helps couples sort through their problems. Counseling can get to the root of your partner’s issue. Is he concerned financially? Does he not feel prepared to be a father? Maybe he doesn’t want the attention taken away from him.
Several counseling services in Clarion offer free or low-cost counseling based on income.
Is He Open to Learning More About Parenting?
We provide no-cost educational classes if you and/or your partner want to learn about parenting. These easy online classes teach everything from prenatal care to parenting a toddler.
When you and your partner take classes, you can earn points toward shopping in our Nursery Nook. Not only do you learn great parenting tips, but you also earn baby items.
Does He Need Time For it to Sink In?
It’s essential to recognize the announcement of your unplanned pregnancy is as much of a shock for him as it was for you. It may take him more time to accept the fact that he is going to be a father.
Be patient. Invite your partner to all of your doctor’s appointments so he can begin to understand what is happening. Keep the lines of communication as open as possible.
What Does It Mean if It’s the End of Your Relationship?
Sadly, his disagreement with your pregnancy could be the end of your relationship. You cannot make him accept the pregnancy, and he cannot legally force you to make a particular decision.
No matter what, do not stay in an abusive relationship. You need to take care of yourself and your baby. If you are concerned for your safety, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-SAFE (7233).
At Next Step, we offer a course to help you if you are struggling with the sadness and anger that comes from abuse or toxic relationships.
